The CERT Division of CMU SEI is dedicated to cyber research and response, conducting collaborative and innovative, evidence-based research to strengthen the cyber ecosystem and protect national security and prosperity.

This session will provide an overview of agentic AI and how it is presently being used.  The session will include a discussion on what is needed to leverage agentic AI, how organizations can get started with using this technology, what problems it can help address, and what are the risks and concerns senior executives may find using agentic AI.A short presentation will be followed by an open Q&A.

Dr. Thomas Scanlon

Dr. Thomas Scanlon serves as a Principal Research Scientist and Technical Manager within the CERT Division’s Cyber Security Foundations Directorate at Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute (CMU SEI).

Tom leads the CERT Data Science program which incorporates artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and statistical analyses to develop solutions for cybersecurity challenges. He also performs applied research in the areas of software engineering, DevSecOps, cyber risk management, usability and HCI, threat modeling, and supply chain security.

Dr. Robert Garrett

Dr. Robert Garrett serves as an Associate Data Scientist within the CERT Division’s Cyber Security Foundations Directorate at CMU SEI.

Robert co-authored a recent systematization of knowledge on agentic AI security that maps threat surfaces and best-practice mitigations across the agent lifecycle and proposes a repeatable framework for risk assessment and adoption in real-world deployments.
