Gen AI: Protecting Users and Data in the Age of Shadow AI

5:30 - 8:00pm CT | Milwaukee, WI

Event Overview

Generative AI is reshaping how organizations operate — unlocking efficiencies, automating complex processes, and enabling faster analysis of large datasets. But as adoption accelerates, so do the risks. In many organizations, AI use becomes decentralized, with employees turning to unsanctioned tools that fall outside governance frameworks. Recent findings show that while 90% of organizations now use Generative AI, 72% of that activity is driven by Shadow IT.

Over the past year alone, the volume of data sent to Generative AI applications has surged more than 30-fold — raising serious concerns around the exposure of sensitive data, proprietary models, and user trust. Protecting trust and maintaining ethical, secure AI usage requires a foundational shift: securing AI starts with preparing the data.

That means classifying and governing sensitive information, gaining real-time visibility into AI usage, and embedding policy enforcement across every layer of the digital ecosystem.

Discussion will explore:

  • Effective governance models: How to sanction and oversee Generative AI usage while maintaining visibility and control over unsanctioned tools and Shadow AI behavior.
  • Data security readiness: Best practices for preparing data environments — through classification, access controls, and policy enforcement — so that AI initiatives can proceed safely.
  • Mitigating Shadow AI risk: Practical controls (e.g. DLP, identity-aware access, zero trust principles) that help detect and reduce ungoverned AI activity.
  • Security’s strategic role: How security leaders are taking the lead in cross-functional AI governance — balancing innovation with protection, and embedding security into the foundation of enterprise AI adoption.
